Gone are the days where shopping in Bali is all about souvenirs and batik sarongs. You can now spend days walking along the streets and warungs, browsing through the many stylish shops selling gorgeous floating dresses to flirty bikinis. Even if you’re not into clothes, you can take time to shop for local art pieces created by renowned artists.

We share with you 3 of our favourite shops.

Niluh Djelantik

“It all started with love…”, said Niluh Djelantik, the owner of self-branded high-end leather shoes, designed and handcrafted at her Bali atelier. The humble lady claimed that the shoes are 100% handmade. Ever since world celebrities came over to her store, the shoes become one of everyone’s shopping lists. Julia Roberts is one of her loyal customers, beyond the fame of the “Eat, Pray, Love” movie itself. Niluh won the Best Fashion Brand & Designer The Yak Awards 2010, which further lifts this local brand to the international stage.

Lulu Yasmine

The clothes at this classy boutique look like they were made to dance in the sea breeze—floaty dresses and tops made of light fabric like silk and cotton make up most of the collection here. Brazilian designer Lulu Yasmine started the fashion brand seven years ago, incorporating a European twist to clothes that will wear well in the tropical weather. She draws inspiration from her travels around the world and creates sophisticated pieces for the modern woman. Today, she has three branches in Bali and has even expanded her offerings to introduce a children’s line.

Made Wianta, Seputih Gallery

Respected artist Made Wianta may have been involved most recently in a play titled Shackled Spirits, but his creations are the opposite of restraint. Over two decades, this multi-modal artist has produced some 14,000 works that span the gamut of installation, performing art, painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramic, photography and poetry writing. His strong sense of environmental awareness and community responsibility have yielded installations such as Forest and Life, and also prompted him to hold exhibitions in support of social causes. His art can be viewed at his home and permanent gallery, Seputih Gallery.
