The performance involves a chorus of at least 50 men, sitting in concentric circles and chanting: cakcak-cak-cak. With no instruments and just their voices, the men interweave as many as seven rhythms, creating a rich tapestry of sounds and textures.

There is usually no decisive resolution to this conflict. Instead, the audience is content with only a temporary victory of good over evil. “That is faith,” says  I Ketut Sutapa, a trance dancer in a Kecak troupe, “That there is always good and evil, but good wins.” Good and evil.
