Take a party full of kids and their parents, young adults, maybe grandparents, and how do you ensure all of them have fun? Everyone knows there is no party without some bubbly—be it from bottles or the bath. And when it’s a party with people from eight to 80 years old, add bubbles, bubbles and more bubbles. “Kids love it, and adults find this refreshing compared to the usual mix of just booze and music,” says Adiansa “Dee” Rachman, Entertainment and Vibe Manager of Hard Rock Hotel Bali. “It’s a sure-fire way of getting everyone to have a good time.”
The dance floor is a six-by-eight-metre giant tub covered in about four feet of foam, and there’s no age limit to enter. In place of a spinning glittery disco ball hangs a foam machine, a compact cannon-like box that sprays a continuous stream of thick foam to fill the dance tub. Preparation for a foam party at night starts early at 11am with the setting up of the dance tub and DJ console. After lunchtime comes the installation of lighting and audio equipment. It’s then time to prepare the winning ingredient—foam. To produce a continuous stream of foam that runs for two hours, about 25 litres of foam liquid is needed, mixed with 1,000 litres of water. The staff, having tested various options, decided on one that’s scent-free, gentle on the skin and doesn’t sting the eyes. The foam liquid is pumped through two hoses which feed into the foam machine that churns out a continuous stream of froth for two hours.
When the sun has set, pink lights are turned on and the DJ cranks up the volume of the music, while hotel guests fill up the dance floor as quickly as foam fills the tub. For those who much prefer not to get themselves enveloped in a foamy mess, Hard Rock Cafe, at the start of Kuta’s beach road, has daily live music performances. Established in 1993, the cafe is a long-standing Bali nightlife institution and recently had a refurbishment complete with a grand relaunch party in December 2013.
